    Computer magazines?

I've been looking at a number of computer magazines at the bookstore. There's so many of them, and I wonder what my peers subscribe to. I'm talking about magazines like:

    • Photoshop User
    • Visual Studio
    • Linux Journal
    • MSDN Magazine
    • Smart Computing
    • VB/Access
    • SQL Server

And many others...too many to list here! But those are some of what I've looked at.

Any feedback on magazines out there?

The only computer related magazines I subscribe to are Maximum PC, PC Magazine, and PC Gamer. I used to get some programming magazines but I just had too many magazines to read so I dropped the subscriptions. I used to get Visual Studio back before it merged with another magazine and had a former name.

...which is tax deductible for US citizens since it is a work related expense.

That's it for me -- and i check out some apple magazines, but I usually read them online now. Communication Arts, How, and Print are good 'design' magazines, but they are absolute dips when it comes to coding practices, so you won't find any enlightenment there -- a lot more flash and frames... because they just don't know anything else

    Pretty nice deal!

I'm not really a gamer, so most of those aren't worth much to me. PC Magazine looked good, however, and maybe even Computer Shopper.

Most unfortunately, the offer is good only in the USA, and I live in Canada

Anybody read or subscribe to PHP Architect? I might be interested in a magazine for PHP.

    LOL

Kinda on topic, about 6-7 years back PC Monthly had an issue just for subscribers that outlined the past 20 and next 20 years in computing. If anyone comes accross that, it's a great read. Already a lot of the stuff they talked about have come into play, USB drives, folding keyboards etc. The stuff they said was 15-20 years out was straight out of Sci-fi. AI, nanobots, cars that drive themselves, soda you can change the flavor of at the touch of a button.

    Guess we'll see.

Are sites promoting "free" or "cheap" magazine subscrioptions worth bothering with? I've done some searching, and found a number of sites promoting cheap yearly subscriptions (about $4 US)...anyone done this before?

Did once in college -- what I found out was the small print either required a long term commitment, or it was a pain to cancel. Make sure they have a phone number that works for customer service, or you'll be calling your credit card company to work with you on canceling it -- the place I did it had a phone number that only hit an answering machine at night, and was busy during the day. Took three weeks for my credit card company to hunt them down, cancel, and refund me.

And I'm not picking on Canadians, where else would Americans like to put their air pollution?

as a precaution before you subscribe, call there customrs services, then when you get through just say you where just testing the standards and thank them for there time.

that way you will know if it has a good service reputation.
