    HL2 Source leaked.

You guys hear about the Half-Life 2 engine source being leaked? Apparently it has been confirmed now.

I never actually thought things like that really happend, but there's the proof I guess. How'd you hate to be a valve developer right now?

Yeah I heard. The most logical explanation is that someone from the inside leaked it out or someone hacked them.

I bet they are grilling everyone with access to it on the inside. And as for being hacked you'd think they'd keep the code on an isolated network, especially with a product with so much hype. I would.

So is the entire source code leaked or just part of it?

Apparently it's the source code for the entire engine. 107mb over 7000 files or something, though it's been said it's being destributed in a .rar which is only 37mb and the servers hosting it are getting hit really hard...seems everyone will have a copy soon.

I'd have it on an isolated network as well. And of course tight security on computers that are hooked to the web.

Yeah, I know somebody that's even got a copy.

I just have trouble believing they could be so stupid to let this get out. I mean if they got hacked, you'd think they'd be working off a encrypted PGP drive or something so the only thing to steal would be a one big encrypted file.

Maybe all that code is for some desktop stripper program and next week they'll say it was just a hoax.

Well yeah, I mean who's going to check if any of the functions in half that code is even called? I'd love it if it were a hoax, I mean the hype was already gettinfg big over the fact that it's going to be so awesome...this'd put sales through the roof, everyone is talking about HL2 now. Just imagine, if it were a hoax, this would be like, the cheapest most effective (value for money wise) advertisement they could do.

Wouldn't mind a glimpse of whatever code is there regardless of what it does, it's most likely better than mine. :P

Also I heard some people got it to compile, apparently it just shows a loading screen and then just quits because there is no game data.

Pirating software is one thing, pirating source code is another story.

Software piracy puts dents into profits, while source code piracy can do more harm financially, as well as intellectually. If I worked for 5 years on a state-of-the-art 3d graphics engine utilizing proprietary techniques I've developed myself, I'd be raising hell over the fact that some cracker got in and obtained the true result (not finished product) of my labor without doing any of the hard work whatsoever. This is blatant theft. Pirating Windows XP or Photoshop you could justify as extended trial periods, but taking their source code? Yikes.

    lol.

If it's not a hoax, I'm waiting to see if valve sue Microsoft. Seeing as it was pretty likely outlook was what gave them access to the computers in the first place.

Yeah, Mhtml...but if that was the case, the world would have sued M$ years ago and then about 3 million times a week every day from then on for criminal negligence/incompetence. Most people still wouldn't know what a virus was, if M$ did their job completely.

M$ in the EULA has stated that they aren't liable for defects, intentional or otherwise in their products.

I'm not a gamer, so the "HL2" bit confused me at first.

The question I have is why would someone leak it? Who benefits?

When a significant portion of the world's networks and personal computers use such flawed software, the EULA really doesn't cover it...

    oops, it's already happened.

I read about that yesterday, and I have to say it is the most pathetic case I have ever seen, and if they win, then anyone can sue anyone and get away with it. I just hope that they lose and Microsoft can laugh another day.

You're kidding? Valve must be really sweating now if people can actually play it. . . I didn't think that many people would get it to compile.

Yeah it is true, I know someone that got it and tried it. It is supposed to be pretty incomplete and buggy still it nevertheless runs.
