Did you get the ballot box?

On March 1, Microsoft started the "ballot box" in Windows Update offering everyone in Europe the option of selecting and changing browsers.

Opera downloads have more than tripled in major European countries, such as Belgium, France, Spain, Poland and the UK

really interesting, I'm still a bit surprised that the uptick has been that much. Wondering why people didn't simply install another browser previously. Certainly glad that they did though, looking forward to see IE market share a month or two out.

The update; I require IE on my Windows box because my family use IE and can't use anything else, so I put Chrome Frame on there and hope for the best. Next upgrade I've promised myself that we'll go Chrome-only though.

Any particular reason they can't use anything else? Just curious.

The ballot box isn't an update. It's a choice. It offers you the choice to install one of the other browsers. Perhaps you understood that.

btw, my whole family, including those not in my house, all use browsers other than IE and have so for years without any issues.

I don't know why. I once migrated them to Firefox and they did not like this at all. I do not wish them to use IE, but I'm not going to impose my will upon them. It is ultimately their decision, and I admit it was wrong of me to forcibly switch them in the first place; I would not like it if someone nukes my Ubuntu system and installed Solaris, faster or not.

Drdr (my phone just tried to call you 'deer'), the ballot box is installed via Windows Update for already active European systems as an 'important update'. It is not to my knowledge checked by default, but Windows does advise you to always install important updates. Good for you, drdr, but my family prefer otherwise.

Ah! Well that's good. I was worried it would be a one time shot, then disappear.

After the first week, Opera downloads tripled and Firefox reports 50K to 100K downloads from the ballot box.

Also found out the ballot box will continue for 5 years.

Awesome, though tripling Opera downloads might not necessarily be the hardest thing in the world. The ballot box seems very weird under XP, though: it looks unfinished...
