more than 10,000 hotmail accounts hacked

I got it first from mainstream media such as the BBC (I’m sure all tech related media is also reporting). The funny thing about it is: I read that the account data was posted on pastebin.com and I went to that site just to see the following message:

Pastebin.com is getting an unprecedented amount of traffic due to a news story in which some leaked Hotmail passwords have been pasted on this site

Pastebin.com was intended as a tool to aid software developers, not for distributing this sort of material. Filters have been put in place to prevent reoccurrence, but the current traffic level is unsustainable.

Pastebin.com is just a fun side project for me, and today it's not fun. It will remain offline all day while I make some further modifications

(I’m sorry if I’m not making it any better by posting the URL, hehe.

However, this shows us what’s possible in this cross-linked world and what power someone can have by a simple action. We should all be careful where we’re going with this.

I think the internet has exposed just how vile and despicable human nature can be. Rather depressing.

I would've thought you'd have realized this after Two Girls One Cup

Yeah, well, with passwords some people use, I can bet you over 10,000 hotmail accounts have the password of "123456" or "password".

    There, go hack

Cor! I'd better change my password; and to think; the old one was so easy to remember.
I know, I'll make it '246810'. They'll never guess that.

Such genius. I don't know how I do it.

Another easy way to hack an email account is to click the password forgotten link and then try answering the security question. People have mostly selected the most easy guess-able answers to questions like "whats your favourite sports team" , "where were you born".
Years back in school, we friends used to use that to hack each other's accounts. One guy's account could not be hacked. Turned out the answer to the security question "Whats your pet name" was intentionally "Chaudry".

Chaudry was a friend of this guy (till that day atleast).

What good would that do you? An email with a new password is sent to the email address on file. You'd have to have access to that email account to get the new password, but that's the problem in the first place. Unless you're using an email service that is lame enough to just display the new password?
