French Air Force grounded by Windows virus

    Link
The aircraft were unable to download their flight plans after databases were infected by a Microsoft virus...

At one point French naval staff were also instructed not to even open their computers.
I am just floored that any defense department would use Windows in such a situation.

EDIT: After reading closer to the bottom, apparently the virus came from a connection to their non-secure network running Windows.

    lol

The French press also reported that the only consolation for the French Navy was that it was not the only ones to have fallen victim to the virus. It said that a report in the military review Defense Tech revealed that in the first days of January 2009 the British Defence Ministry had been attacked by a hybrid of the virus that had substantially and seriously infected the computer systems of more than 24 RAF bases and 75 per cent of the Royal Navy fleet including the aircraft carrier Ark Royal.
No surprise there then!! With all the loss of sensitive data and computer related incompetence we have seen in the past three years I am noit surprised with this and am actually curious as to how long it will be before a planes comes down because of this type of stupidity.

O-h-h-h that reminds me of another recent thread.

This seems incomplete. Let me finish.
The virus is a type of malware controlling the system at the hardware level. Grisoft AVG reveals that the software goes by the name of 'Vista'.
    PHP Code:
    header('HTTP/1.1 420 Enhance Your Calm');

The avionics equipment in the aircraft would not be running Windows. The mission planning system (MPS) which they use to pull together various information they need for a mission would be running Windows most likely. This is typically a laptop or desktop sitting in a ready room and not on the aircraft. That MPS then is used to load that data onto essentially a memory stick for a lack of a more technical description. They then use that to load the mission data into the mission system in the aircraft which will not be running windows.

    I didn't think so.

Then it's worse than I thought it was and I reiterate my original statement that I'm floored any defense department would even consider doing that.

Why is that shocking? Every government/military on the planet runs windows on the bulk of their PC's along with the bulk of the rest of the civilian world.

That such an insecure operating system can be so close to such an important set of data. You'd think they'd have custom software since everything else, the aircraft for example, is all custom hardware.

The hackers wouldn't know about MPS software or the mission data it is used to put together. MPS stations would only ever be connected to internal networks if even connected to a network. They don't need to be.

The avionics hardware in the aircraft are not generally custom to that aircraft. The software it runs however would be. Viruses are not a concern.
