    Forum Traffic

Is it just my imagination, or has forum activity dropped off? Not just on this forum, I might add. Spooks me, because if it has, I assume it reflects overall business conditions.

Could have something to do with JavaScriptKit.com experiencing some network problems lately, today included. Much of the forum traffic comes from there.

I didn't find out about this site from there. I found it from somewhere else or I just came about it in my usual indirect searching that I do for something that I don't know I am searching for.

I'm talking about something that has happened over a number of weeks, not just a few days. It feels like activity has slowed to a crawl. But, I dont have anything quantitative to back that up with, it is just an impression.

like what? i dont think advertisments will be very effective. we could plan some commando operations in the sitepoint forums advertising for codingforums! j/k maybe you should have a popup window in JSK showing codingforums main page or have a nice flash animation advert

    Quality is always over quantity!

I agree advertising would have an effect, but as soon there are large number of members disobeying rules and asking "silly" (very frequently asked questions), the environment of these forums are ruined.

Besides, if there are not many problems posted, this means both that most of the questions has been solved and also that our members have very advanced knowledge .

I'm sure activity in CF will grow. But I'm keeping my thumbs up that direction of the growth is correct.

I don't think anyone is advocating quantity in the sense of herding folks in and just going for numbers. The concern I raised was not about how fast to grow it or confidence that it will grow. My concern was that we are seeing a SHRINKAGE. As far as quality and quantity, sure we want quality. But when it comes to forums, there must be a critical mass in order to get quality posts. If there is not enough going on on a forum, then there is not enough there in the way of stimulation to attract the better posters, and the thing will tend to whither away. It becomes self-fulfilling. The more you see that a post generates no interest or dialogue, the less you come back. So lack of quantity also leads, at a certain point, to lack of quality.... Why the shrinkage (if it is happening - again, my impression, without any data)? Why was the forum more active 6, or 8 or 10 weeks ago? Still my guesss that it reflects shrinking economic activity, but I know little about the competing forums or javaScript.com or whatever. Whatever it is, I hate to see it. And, no, I don't have a solution. Again, I think that understanding the cause is the first step to figuring out what, if anything, can be done about it. If I don't know the cause, I can't offer an informed suggestion how to try to address it

I have noticed there are less posts lately.

Maybe people are actually using the search feature and solving their problems without asking someone to do if for them... (do you sense my sarcasm?).

I think that quality over quantity is very ambiguous.
