Why not have a serverside script posting forum?

Well I believe that my subject said it all, Why not have a serverside script posting forum?

I think that It would be very helpfull, that way when certain scripts that have had problems that have been worked out in the ss forums could be posted for others.

That's certainly a possibility, but are there enough server side scripters to keep the category going? What are some examples of scripts that would be posted?

well I guess that their are a lot of different types of scripts,
I'm working on a list of scripts which I've set as goals so that when I've finished all of them I can say I know the language.

    Getting client information
getting client information - through form
Redirection based on IP, Browser And Selection
Dropdown menu - Text file based and Database based
Counter - database and tex file based
    News Ticker
    HTML page creator
    Shopping cart

Plus there are heaps of other types of scripts :

Ad Management, Calendars, Chat Scripts, Click Tracking,
Content Management, Counters, Database Tools, Date and Time, Discussion Boards, Email Systems, File Manipulation, Form Processors, Graphs and Charts, Guestbooks, Image Galleries, Link Indexing,Mailing List Managers,News Publishing,Polls and Voting,Quote Display,Redirection,Search Engines,SearchingSite Navigation,Site Recommendation,Tests and Quizzes,User Authentication, User Management, Web Traffic Analysis

How about having a Post A Script section where you could post not just JavaScript, but Server Side scripts as well. It would cut down on the maintenance and allow people to post Perl, PHP, JavaScript and other languages.

Not a bad idea. The guidelines for that forum could state that the particular type of the script posted be included in the subject line. For example, "JavaScript: capturing blah...", "PHP: detecting blah". Providing a method of organization so the language of the script would be clear right from the subject line of the thread.

Yeah, I like that Idea. And having all scripts in one area would be good, that way you could do a quick comparison between similar style scripts in different languages.

Yeah having them on one forum with the language in the title like suggested so then if someone wants to read all available PHP scripts they can search the forum for any threads with 'PHP' in the subject for example.

I certainly have some ASP scripts that people could find useful.

I suppose now is as good a time as any to bring it up. These forums are associated with freewarejava.com, javascriptkit.com, and dynamicdrive.com, all of which are about collecting tutorials and scripts. that's three places already for interesting and useful scripts. a fourth one here in the forums? i don't know. maybe all that's really needed is some reorganization amongst the sites and forums.

    just a thought.

K, I'm not sure about this - but aren't all 3 of those sites dedicated to the Client side, rather than the Server Side???

Mhtml's original post was about posting Server side scripts.

    Just my observations...

In response to George's comment - I do think there are enough Server Side Scripters to keep something like that going...

well, they are and they aren't. freewarejava is about java, and you could argue that java is clientside, and you can argue that it's server side. then, there's the .htaccess tutorial at the javascript kit. and, imo, if we're gonna mix them all together here in the forum, then why not just mix them all together on the sites, which are already set up to house scripts?

    dunno. maybe i'm just weird.

Is there any chance of this happening? I mean as someone capable of writing a script but nowhere near as knowledgeable as fp, spooky etc I'd love to see what comes up, there's no better way to learn than checking out other peoples work.

i think that mhtml idea was pretty good. but about DD and JSK the thing is that the scripts will never be changed or fixed (unless the author makes a V2 but that isnt very likley) so if they were in a forum people could fix and add stuff.

that's an excellent point, whackaxe. i'll agree that maintainence is important. but i still think that there's a certain amount of redudancy that needs to be addressed.

The most important criteria I need to consider before adding a new category is whether there's enough interest and expertise in the field to make it sustainable. Honestly I don't see that with a server side scripts category yet. The forum is ever evolving, however, so no idea is completely shut off until the fat lady sings That includes the infamous webmaster pit/lounge.
