The world is a barter system; there is nothing that really says I have to offer money in exchange for services. I can offer another another service or product in exchange (ie: I can offer web development services in exchange for web design services). Government hates this though since you can't really tax something that carries no tangible monetary value lol.
Typically money is the best exchange as there is no limitation on what I can use said monies for.
[Homer searches under the couch for a peanut]
Homer : Hmm ... ow, pointy! Eww, slimy. Oh, moving! Ah-ha! Oh, twenty dollars ... I wanted a peanut!
Homer's brain : Twenty dollars can buy many peanuts!
    Homer : Explain how.
Homer's brain : Money can be exchanged for goods and services.
