    "Thanks in advance"

Maybe it's just a personal bugbear, but I really despise the expression "thanks in advance" - at best it's presumptuous (I'm assuming someone is going to help) - at worst it's emotional blackmail (I've already said thanks so the emotional imperative is more strongly on potential answerers).

In either case - it isn't really gratitude - it's as empty as those automated tannoys that say "we apologise for the inconvenience". It puts me off - I sometimes don't respond to questions purely because they said it (and I wonder how many won't look at *this* thread because of the subject!)

I'm not pointing at any individuals, and I don't want to be puritanical - but I do suggest adding something to the posting guidelines, generally discouraging its use.

I think the main problem with "Thanks in advance" isn't so much the lack of sincerity behind it, but simply its overuse in everyday English. It seems every other written conversation online these days that has to do with requesting help ends with "thanks in advance." Believe it or not, I've actually thought about this exact issue in the past as well, as I admit "thanks in advance" can get agitating. I derived at the above conclusion in the end. It's almost become a reflex for people to end their message with that phrase. I try not to search for any meaning behind it anymore. Whether or not a person is truly thankful for the help he receives will come in his replies.

okay then ... so perhaps I was being a little knee-jerk

But then again - perhaps we could generally discourage the use of 'automatic phrases' - things you type without thinking about it.

Evolt.org has a "preview" screen you can see *before* your post is added to the general forum, but it *looks like* a general forum post - the best of both worlds - because reading back your message in rendered text is crystalising in a way that reading it in a textarea isn't so.

This is such a can of worms; are people saying "thanks for helping solve my problem" or "er, yeah thanks, I'll just go and find the answer myself".

Hey, I'm guilty of using that phrase before. What I really meant, of course, was: this'll irritate you until you finally answer my question(s) - thank you very much. I didn't realize it was that obvious. How about: will you please answer my question now, or will you answer it later? But you will answer it, right...?

Actually, this may look silly, but I’ve been in therapy for that. My Zen-boudhist-psychiatrist came up with this sollution:
    - just reply: “You’re welcome”
    - + add link to this thread Thanks in advance
I’d be most gratefull if you pay half of my psychiatrists bill.
Thanks in advance! (<-- just to give you some practice opportunity)
