    Forum feature requests

OK, here I’m opening a thread dedicated to bug reports or feature requests regarding the forum. My first wishes are as follows:

    1. Ever since the forum version and theme were changed the “code” buttons (the one with the hash mark ‘#’ and the PHP button) were removed from (or rather not added to) the editor in the quick reply box. Is there any way you could bring them back?
      • There used to be another button for “inline code” (the respective BB code tags are [icode][/icode]) that was added afterwards; I don’t remember whether that was a custom extension or part of a standard implementation but I would also be happy to have that back (that was a button with hashmark and an italicized ‘i’ closely next to it).

    2. Could you disable the auto-retrieval/generation of page titles for links? This is a coding forum and it is usually more important to see the actual URLs – there is no need for these SEO enhancements that might be useful or important for forums with more general subjects.
    3. I think the buttons related to tables in the third row of the TinyMCE toolbar (in advanced mode) can be removed for simplicity. I’ve never encountered anyone posting actual formatted tables here, and I don’t really see a need for that, too.

    Hey,

Just a follow-up to your feature requests:

I was told that CF management is looking for a developer who can work on this.

In fact, there may be a developer on the hosting company staff who can address this issue. They are looking into it.

In any case, they are aware of your requests.

So, let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

    Thanks!
    Regards, R.J.

Another fix that would only affect users with moderator/admin status:

There is supposed to be an envelope icon beside threads with posts that need moderation. However, the icon isn't always there. This feature used to work all the time and now it's hit or miss. Of course, I can logon to the moderator control panel to make sure moderated posts are not missed. However, that's an extra step I shouldn't have to take if the envelope icon showed up where it should all the time.

And adding to what vinyl-junkie wrote: When I view a member’s post list there is absolutely no indication of which posts are already soft deleted. I think in the old forum theme there used to be some indication. A small trash can icon would already do the trick but a greyed out background like in the forum post lists would be better.

    Hey fellow CF'ers,

I have forwarded your requests to CF management.

Also, FYI, soon I will be able to directly submit tickets to CF's hosting company, so that should expedite the attention given to your bug reports and to at least some of your new feature requests.

(I'm still waiting to hear back about the hiring of a developer to implement some of your suggestions.)

So, we'll see how it goes. I'm hopeful...

Kindly inform the management that members like felgall, Old Pedant... are no more and the remaining from the list are also getting aged day by day!

    I'm hopeless.

    Hi there,

Not sure what "management" can do for you? Sure, it would be nice if they (management) directly participated in the forum. But, at the end of the day, I'm just thankful that CF is still here and seems to have bounced back from the technical issues it was having a few months ago.

It is sad indeed that these members have passed.

In light of their passing, I think the best thing we can do is keep CF alive and well (and growing!). I believe that's what felgall and Old Pedant would have wanted.

So, in that vein, I can certainly pass on any suggestions that you might have (to management).

    Let me know.

    Thanks
    Regards, R.J.

I’d very much appreciate an active administrator, at least. Someone with permissions to change user names (had one or two requests like this in the past). At best someone with (FTP) access to the files of the forum to be able to make the changes I requested (and haven’t been addressed at all yet).

I'm sorry that your requests have not been addressed yet. I got busy, and I didn't realize this was the case.

I've called and emailed management about:

    1) Setting up someone as an admin (in the "admin" role) who is actually active on CF, and

    2) Setting up someone with an account on CF's hosting company's ticket system, so that bugs and minor feature requests can be reported directly to the people who are paid to do something about it.

I don't have a ton of time, but I will try to contribute in any way that I can. If I (or management) have to appoint someone else to fulfill some or all of these responsibilities, then volunteers are certainly welcome.

Stephan, do you have any interest in being an Administrator? You've been around for 10 years, so that has to qualify you for something...

    Let me know.

    Thanks.
    Regards, R.J.

Well, that wasn’t exactly my intention when I brought this up but now that you ask me so nicely, I could certainly see myself in that position.
