Old Pedant (Bill Wilkinson) has passed away.

Eric Wilkinson has advised me that his father Bill (screen name Old Pedant) passed away on November 10th. He had been in declining health over the last two years as he battled an aggressive form of cancer. He loved being a part of the software community and helping others. He was posting and responding up to almost the last day before he went into the hospital in October. Eric found his browser open to CodingForums (and why it might show more recent activity).

For myself, Old Pedant taught me a huge amount about Javascript and programming. Although I never met him, I regard him as a true friend. I and all Coding Forums members will be the poorer for his passing. RIP, Bill.

All the code given in this post has been tested and is intended to address the question asked.
Unless stated otherwise it is not just a demonstration.

Oh, sorry to hear that. At least we can assume he died doing what he loved.

So sorry to hear it, CF will be less without him. All of us can only hope to be so motivated at his age.

Thank you Philip for taking the time to inform everyone of this. I received an email this morning from Eric as well, and it greatly saddened me to hear of his fathers passing. He was looked up to not only for his amazing skills, but also for his willingness to help and teach. He truly will be missed as a member of this community.

    The Passing of Old Pedant

    Hello CF,

I have the unfortunate task of informing this community of the passing of my father, William Wilkinson, earlier this month. I wish I had taken a bit more advantage of his knowledge while he was still around, but I'm glad he has helped so many others on their journey into computer sciences. Some of you may or may not know his history and how he got started so many years ago. I think he kept his identity and history somewhat guarded and didn't open up much.

In 1981 he was the cofounder of Optimized Systems Software (there's a Wikipedia page for it) and supplied Languages and Operating Systems primarily for the Atari systems. Although they also ventured into some Apple territory briefly with a release of Basic. After OSS he went on to work as a software engineer at a few different companies in the Bay Area before moving north to the Seattle region in 1993 to be a part of a Paul Allen company called Asymetrix, and later at ChiliSoft! (Bought out by Sun Microsystems), Microsoft for a few years, UIEvolution, and finally F5Networks from which he semi-retired. He continued work part time and posting here often.

In late 2013 he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the blood and bone, treatable, but not curable. For the last two years he was in and out of hospitals, received dialysis (and did a pod cast interview for the Antic Atari Pod Cast while getting dialysis). Sometimes he was not himself due to the heavy medication, and I can see that in some of his posts (especially those where he seemed very short fused). But for the most part he very much enjoyed getting back onto CF and helping as soon as he was able.

In death, his body was donated to the University of Washington, where it was his and our hope that it will be used in the research of the disease and health issues that ultimately took his life.

If you'd like to leave me and or his family a message please do. You may also PM me.

    Sincerely,

    Eric Wilkinson (Young Pedant)

Eric, thanks for posting this information about your dad. As you can see, there was already a thread started a few days ago about this. Of course, you had no way of knowing that since it was located in a forum where you have to be a member for a while in order to see it. I've moved that original thread and merged it with your post so all CF members can see it.

I can tell that you loved your dad very much. We all truly miss him. Thanks again for posting.

    This is terrible news.

Eric I am very sorry to hear of this news. Old Pedant was a great guy around here and very well respected. I looked up to him a lot and am very sad to hear the news. My thoughts are with you.

RIP Bill, you were a legend on this forum.

I too am very very sad to hear he has passed. I too respected, appreciated, and even argued with him a time or two about process, of course in the end he won every time. He was so very very talented and tirelessly kind to help others. RIP Bill we will all miss you very much... Who knows he is probably teaching the good lord about cobol and php I hope that this website finds a way to memorialize him forever.
