    1 browsers to go please

will browser compatibility issues ever be resolved?

Say in 2 years, Will I be able to code something and feel confident that if I followed W3C standards, it will display
the same in all current version browsers.

    on second thought

can't we just have one browser?

Yes, as a matter of fact, if you use web standards to the extent of CSS1 and DOM1, you'll find that the answer to your question is already true.

Naturally though, I like to use advanced CSS2 and DOM2 interfaces, which only Mozilla currently supports (well, IE5/Mac and Opera 6 also offer excellent support of CSS2, but not DOM2). We'll see what IE7 adds, but if IE5 to IE6 is any indication, it won't be much at all.

Sure, use Mozilla. I couldn't be any happier if everyone decided to ditch the inadequate browser known as IE for a more robust, standards-compliant, cross-platform web browser.

I don't believe so, because standards have ambiguities which are interpreted differently by different software engineers. You may be able to get uniform behaviour, but uniform appearance is unacheivable unless everyone uses the same rendering engine.
