    Forum Sugestion

I know this is a programming forum which is obviously used for people with programming problems etc... but due to me posting regulary on a music forum i have noticed it is alot busier/gets more threads replied to quickly etc as there is more people constantly online.... i think this is achieved by the number of OT (off topic) posts that are also posted... i.e keeps people more interested in the site as talking about the same thing all the time will cause people to loose interest.

although some of the OT threads that im talking about may be slightly offensive to some people it keeps them interested and is entertaining.

    just thought.... any opinions???

How did you end up in this forum? This post should join the list of dozens of other posts just like it in the forum feedback and suggestions forum!

Your solution, however obvious is like all solutions there is a bad side to it. These forums have remained in a semi-professional state where people are actually courteous of each other mainly because we do not have an OT forum. . . Sure it's good to be able to post OT stuff, and there are even more benefits than you have posted but moderating such posts would require them in a single forum and as tried before when this website existed in another form it got out of hand people flammed and the OT forum became the main reason people visited, as such real posts (like those of myself) were ignored by those who had the knowlege!

[edit:] I'll see if I can get this moved.

yeah i see exactly what you are saying. but having a seperate OT forum like you said people would only be visiting either one of them and avoiding all of the real questions etc.... just thought it would be easier having a mix of Off and on topics on the same page..
just as an example check out this forum
    http://forum.breakbeat.co.uk/forum/

i feel it works quite well..... i do understand about how difficult to moderate it can be but it is really all about getting a perfect balance on what people find offensive and what they dont.

sorry i posted this in here i just thought it would be better to get opinions of people using the forum for on topic related stuff

We aren't completely strict and people do post OT stuff, but usually only in threads that have an initial purpose in the first place. If you browse a lot of the threads you'll see that most of the regulars go OT at the drop of a hat, any hat ...

We don't run a dictatorship, well spookster would like that but we don't really ... Some degree of OT comments are allowed, often entire threads run for a while.

The reason we don't really allow people posting entire OT threads in forums is because we like to keep everything ordered... And we're doing a pretty good job so far. There is a slight possibility of an OT forum with VB coming but it's a fragile possibility ...
