    PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!! (Discrete A/D Converter)

    Hello,

    I am still pretty new to coding in various languages. I am in school to be an EE so hopefully I will get the hang of it eventually. I have an assignment in which I am having trouble starting, and coming up with a flow chart or any sort of ideas, so at this point anything will help.
    The assignment itself is to come up with a discrete A/D converter. When I first signed up for this, I disregarded the "discrete" part of the logic and figured I'd come up with a simple bridge rectifier design, which is what I would prefer to do. I'm not exactly sure what to do to make this a discrete converter.
    My professor said that he would like to see the incoming of a sine wave in AC to a "stair stepping sine wave" when it comes out as DC. We also use Assembly Language so it is a little difficult to come up with something along those lines as well. For this project we have to come up with the code and hard wire it. I'm not too worried about the wiring, just how to come up with the code. Any help would be amazing!

    i don't see where coding anything would come into play here (i have BSEE as well)... approach if he wants to see sinewave in then square is use opamps... send them to the rail... hard to draw... then use diodes to flip it.... diodes are discrete btw... discrete refers generally to linear devices (silicon) whereas passive components are non-discrete... it is impossible to make anything without resistors/inductors/capacitors so the assignment must be calling for use of discrete circuits (made using both components)... now a simple rectifier circuit one could argue is employing discrete circuit but I think ("he wants to see a square wave") means he wants you to use ur brain a bit more... I don't see the question I guess- are u using a PIC ("assembly language involved")... if so we need to know the ins and outs of the PIC

    Yea thanks, I talked to him today and rather than using a pic he would like me to just use the microprocessor that we use in class. Then I am to create a program that turns on the voltage and clears the cap that is tied low. and the voltage is to go up and down according to how ever many "no ops" are in the code. as the voltage gets higher the cap will charge. and that will create a saw tooth wave which is the output he wants maybe on a display. I guess i am still having trouble with turning this idea into code.
