Complete noob to programming, can't even install MinGW, help?!

    Hi Guys,

I am brand new to the forums so thanks for having me.

I have recently decided to try to understand a little bit of programming and decided that C would be the best place to start.

I downloaded and installed MinGW for SourceForge, but can't get it to recognize when I type in gcc -v in command prompt.

I am running Windows XP and am not sure if I put in the correct variable in the path. I did this by clicking on the variable PATH and adding ;C\MinGW\bin; to the value.

I'm not even experienced with using run in the start menu!

I'm not sure where to go from here, as it doesn't seem to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Jess.

When you open a command window and run the command 'set' (without the quotes) does it list the bin directory in the path variable?

Hi Oracleguy, thanks for giving me a hand with this.

Here is what it says when I go to
    start
    run
    cmd
    set
Here is a sample from it:

    C:\MinGW\bin

I have purchased a book on beginners C Programming and it says to verify it by typing in gcc -v
This will make the compiler respond with the version

Here is the link I downloaded it from:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/

    I am running Windows XP.

Is this enough information for you to possibly help me out?
