I've been an assembly language programmer for over 42 years - pretty hard to beat.

I've have some VB experience.

I'm a novice in C++ but familiar with languages so I don't think catchup here would be very difficult.

But this VisualC++ is a nightmare. I only have one project to do but the support software for the hardware is only in VC++ and having spent a week looking at tutorials it is intimidating to say the least. I don't want to make a career out of it and the supplied software should do 95% of what I need.

The environment I have is VC++5.0 however it looks like the support wizards in later versions are more helpful. Should I upgrade and to what version? It seems like all Microsoft is selling is the .NET stuff. Do I really need that?
