Removing items from the system tray

I have too many icons on my system tray that I'd like to clear off. If i right clicked on each, and select exit from the drop out menu, they would go only to return when d sys starts up again...Im sure there must be a way of removing them permanently from there. How?

    What operating system you using?

If MS XP then you can go to Start menu...run....type " msconfig " & hit the enter key. On the Startup tab you can deselect those programs so they don't load when computer starts up.

I don't know if the " msconfig " will work on other versions of MS Windows or not.
