Memory or CPU? Which to choose?

Ok, i have a computer with 128MB of Ram and intel pentium 3 600Mhz. I plan to upgrade it to make it faster, since i need to request my dad for this additional upgrade and i think i need to choose one only, so which one should i prefer, upgrading the RAM to 256/521 or upgrading the processor to (maybe) pentium 3or4 1Ghz.

So which one should i choose?
(after the upgrade i plan to make it from win98 to winxp)

I would go with memory. XP is a resource hog and will use up 250Mb's of memory just from logging in and sitting there idle.

I'd say upgrade the memory, you'll get a big performance boost over what you have now.

If you did want to get a new processor, without a new motherboard, the highest you can go is a 1.4Ghz Pentium III processor.

I'd go with RAM. I once had a 700mhz Athlon system with 128mb ram running Windows XP. It really was slow and lagged something terrible. Once I'd put in a gig of ram, it flew

I'd recommend a new pc. A PIII 600 is quite the antique these days....And at best you're looking at PC133 SDRAM.....

I mean, if you had to choose, I'd go with RAM at that point, but if cost isn't an issue....hit up pricewatch or something.

You can buy a sempron 2800 with Biostar motherboard AND 256 MB RAM for like, $125....

I dunno, I have a hard time telling anyone with a 600mhz cpu to "upgrade" rather than "replace" ...

    You'll do fine....Best of luck!
