At one point opera was ahead of firefox in terms of standards support however I think (dont quote me on this) firefox is even if not ahead. I much prefer firefox however I can safely say Opera is not a "gimmick", I know many people who use it and prefer it to Firefox... I haven't yet worked out why, but these people do exist.

I prefer firefox only because it's what I've been using for a long time and what I've got used to using. I find Opera's UI a bit bloated for my liking.
In terms of standards, Opera 9 (beta 3) did pass Acid 2 though...

I use firefox too, that's because I have never used opera and am happy with firefox. It has only crashed once with the non-responsive program message, wwhich IE seems to get all of the time.

Firefox is still my browser of choice on Windows, but I prefer Safari on OS X - just seems more Mac-ish, I guess.

I've used Opera a couple of times, but as Jamie said, it feels a bit bloated.

It is so much better - and because it is open, anyone can work on helpful extensions.
