    Question NWLINK.VXD - Norton blocks on sign-up

    Each time I log on, my Nortons gives me a pop-up box to say that NWLINK.VXD has been blocked. Should it have blocked it? How do I stop it blocking it (if the general advice is that it should be allowed). Finally, am I asking this in the right place?

    Thank you in advance, to anyone who takes the trouble to try to help a granny who is new to computing!

    What OS are you using? I do believe its part of Norton System Works. Could be wrong. What version of Norton do you have? What type?

    Actually, NWLINK.VXD, is the virtual device driver that is used by the Novell Client, and can also be installed if you have the IPX/SPX protocol installed under your network settings... If this computer is your personal computer then:

    right click on Network Neighborhood -> Select Properties

    From here you should see a list of various services, protocols and devices. One of these will say IPX/SPX in the name. You may also see Novell somewhere in the list. Now before you remove any of these, ensure that this computer is not connected to a Novell network, i.e. -- Your personal home computer would most likely not fall into this category...

    If your computer does not connect to a Novell network, then it would be safe for you to remove the protocols and services associated with Novell.

    Question NWLINK.VXD - removing protocols...

    I'm very sorry, and I'm so grateful to you kind people who have taken the time to respond, but I don't quite understand the reply. Where is Network Neighbourhood, and why do I need to remove anything? If it is essential that I do, how do I do it?
    If Nortons shouldn't be blocking NWLINK, is there perhaps some way I could stop it blocking it?

    Yes there probably is a way to unblock it but you didn't answer the questions that I asked already. What operating system do you have? Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP? What version of Norton do you have?

    I'm sorry I didn't answer your question - I thought the moderator probably over rode what you said. I'm very unused to all this technical stuff.

    I have Windows 98SE and I'm not sure about the Nortons - when I bring it up, it says Nortons 2003, which I updated for another year recently. Don't know exactly where to look to narrow that down.

    NWLINK - home pc

    Yes - it is a personal home computer (see first entry re helping granny get to grips with technology!). Funnily enough, both the computer I have at home and another I have at my holiday apartment in Spain, both supplied and set up by the same person, both have the same NWLINK.VXD message, blocked by Nortons on sign up. Maybe it is a foible of the techie pal that somehow this NWLINK thing is blocked? I can't find out anywhere what NWLINK does, but if unblocking it would make the damn computer move a bit quicker, I'd be delighted if someone could tell me how to unblock it!
    I have since gone on broadband in UK with a new computer supplied by someone else and don't get the message there any more. But I do get it still in Spain.

    As I referenced in my first post NWLINK.VXD is used by the Novell Client. The Novell Client is used to connect to a network using the IPX/SPX protocol (I am saying this with the understanding that this information may be more than is needed, however, keep in mind that this information is important to make my point). Also, in most cases, you will not find the Novell Client or Novell network operating system in use other than in a business.

    Hence my original suggestion, merely remove the client and all references to Novell from your computer.

    I informed you earlier to check for a 'Network Neighborhood' which should be located on your desktop, however, if you do not have this, then try this:

    Click on Start --> Control Panel

    In the control panel locate an icon named 'Network' and double-click on it.

    When it opens, you may see the following:

    Client for Microsoft Networks
    Client for Netware Networks This is the Novell one
    IPX/SPX-compatible protocol This is the Novell one
    NetBEUI
    TCP/IP

    The ones above that I marked as being the Novell branded services/protocols or drivers are not needed on your system and so therefore can be removed. As to whether removal will speed up your system, I cannot really say, however, removing these two items should speed your system up as they are resources.

    You may also check in Add/Remove programs to see if you have anything in there that has Novell or Netware in the name (Groupwise and ZEN are other things to look for yet I doubt that these will be on your system).

    Thank you very much for attempting to make that more understandable to someone who is a little at sea - but trying to swim! I will print out your latest and try to deal with it - I suppose by highlighting the items mentioned I can then delete? I shall try, anyway. Thank you

    Sage/Network Neighborhood

    I found the above and when I went into it, it only had a globe. When I clicked on that I got 'entire network/not accessible'.
    I couldn't find anything you mentioned in Add/Remove.
    Do you have any other suggestions I can try, please?

    Ok, instead of opening the Network, right click on it and choose properties... From there you should be able to follow the rest...
