    Videocard Suggestions

    Hello,

I havnt been on here in a while but I'd like to thank the seniors of this forum for all the help they gave me when I was a young 'un lol.. Ok, im only 18 right now but still!

Anyways, I'm workin on my DREAM PC lol... I've came to the point where I need to buy a video card and its a grey area for me... Anyways, I just want to get a few suggestions from you all. I'm not looking for anything TOP-OF-THE-LINE even though if the price is right, I will take it I've been looking at the Radeon x1800... I dont want to spent TOO much over $500... but $650 is my ABSOLUTE stop point. I want to get the best video quality while playing my games and such but I dont want to go TOO overboard (but leave a nice room for expansion). I want a card that I wont need to swap out too soon because of new technology (maybe thats just unavoidable).

This is my current system so far:

    Gigabyte 8INXP (P4 Titan Series)[Intel E7205 chipset supporting HT]
    Intel P4 2.40aGHz w/ 1MB L2 Cache (I will need to change this anyways)

I wish I hadnt bought that CPU now.. Ugh... Any opinions on the motherboard? So I'll know what to expect? Anyways, I apologize if I included too much useless information

    Thank you,
    -Jason

Well if you REALLY wanted to get the max setup on video cards, with the most room for expansion, you would first need to change out your mobo (sorry). The Gigabyte 8INXP (P4 Titan Series) is an 8x AGP which can still rock by todays standards, but are actually being phased out by PCI Express 16x. You should first look for a motherboard that has a PCI Express 16x slot in it, and then go with a card that is of that configuration. An AGP card will not fit in a PCI XPRESS 16x slot...hard to believe i know.

As for Video Cards themselves go, I prefer ATI, but thats just a personal choice. If you did get a new mobo that had a PCI Express 16x slot, I would recommend http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150105 for $525. If you are going to keep the AGP setup I would recommend something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102502 .

You should ready up on what pixel pipelines, different interface types (AGP vs PCI Express 16x), Core Clock, Memory Clock, and the difference between GPU types are. Then you can make an informed decision for yourself and know what you are doing. But maybe you already do and just needed a little suggestion.

    Hope this helps!

Well, I guess Im going a little overboard... I want something that I can use with my current mobo and the next PC i build will use PCI express or would it be a better idea to get something with PCI Express? I mean, how soon until I will HAVE to upgrade to PCI Express to be able to play new games and such?

    Thanks!

You will do fine with the AGP card...The only difference right now is that PCI has a bigger future with bus speeds. I have a $250 saphire radeon x800 Pro card and I can run Doom 3 on pretty much the highest settings with a good fram rate...although I did do some minor overclocking to mine. Point is you will be fine for years. You probably wont NEED to upgrade for new games for like 3 or 4 years I would guess. I am not Vin Diesel, so it's kind of hard for me to see into the future.

Yeah no problem dude. As far as names go, there are several different names. Radeon is a line of cards put out by manufacturer ATI. ATI sells their versions of the cards as well. Other companies, like Saphire (which I really reccomend (if they even make one of those cards I linked to)), take ATIs cards and speed em up, throw on some extra fancy cooling, and then resell them. Radeon is the line of ATI cards, ATI is the manufacturer, Saphire is teh roxorz, and thats about all I can tell you about names/brands and stuff from the ATI line. The other main competitor at the moment is nVidia, but I don't know alot about them.
