    Internet Explorer IE browser, font-style problem

    I'm using IE6.0 and some how it can no longer read certain font styles. One that I have discovered from looking at the source code is Font=Times; Style=Serif. It may be the only one it can't read. I can paste it into Word and read it but not from the browser. Where can IE pick up the proper font styles?

    Thanks in advance.

    If that's from a stylesheet, it shouldn't display anything at all.

    font-family: times;
    font-style: italic;

    It's not from a stylesheet. I've even tried to reinstall IE 6 and it still had the same problem. I don't know why IE isn't picking up the font style. Word can read it but not the browser.

    Then what "source code" are you talking about, no html source should be using "Font=Times; Style=Serif" because that's never been valid html or a valid style sheet declaration. Of course it may just be bad html, maybe posting more of the html around that fragment would be helpful.

    Hi Roy,

    The code can be found at Amazon's site. I'm pasting some of it here....

    <tr><td> &nbsp; </td><td width=18>&nbsp;</td><td> <font face=verdana,arial,helvetica size=-1><a href=/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/music/B000000NKR/reviews/ref=cm_rev_all_1/104-8732496-9419914>editorial reviews</a></font></td></tr>

    <tr><td> &nbsp; </td><td width=18>&nbsp;</td><td> <font face=verdana,arial,helvetica size=-1><a href=/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/music/B000000NKR/customer-reviews/ref=cm_rev_all_1/104-8732496-9419914>customer reviews</a></font></td></tr>

    My browser can't read the font's for the "editorial section" which is frustrating. The characters show up as squares and triangles etc.. But when I copy and paste it to Word I can read it and it shows that it is serif1 Times as the style and font respectively. The code above shows verdana, arial or helvetica fonts.

    It seems like IE can't recognize the style for some reason. I've seen this problem occasionally on other sites as well.

    Thanks for replying!

    StyleSheets

    When I said it wasn't from a StyleSheets I was thinking an external cascading stylesheets. But it is embedded stylesheet code. Sorry for the confusion.

    Actually it looks like your system may have "lost" some fonts, since you've got word can you find Verdana or Arial in the Fonts folder?

    Roy,

    Inside Word, I have arial and verdana but I don't have helvetica.

    I looked in c:\windows\fonts and have those two fonts there but still no helvetica but I don't think it matters. I think the browser uses which ever of those three is available on the clients PC. If one is missing it uses one of the other two that's listed in the stylesheet.

    Thanks.

    And do those fonts work in word? Might be best to try and re-install the fonts. Btw, when you said stylesheet, I thought you meant stylesheet, not font tag attributes

    Nightfire,

    I copy the characters from my browser to Word and I can read them okay. That means to me that my Font folder is okay since Word can display them properly unless Word is substituting an invalid font for one that it does recognize. I would think that if Word can display it properly then IE should also.

    Is Helvetica a common font? I think it is so I'm wondering why it isn't in my Font folder.

    Since I'm missing Helvetica in my font folder maybe there are others that it's missing too. I'll open my book and read how to update my fonts folder. I remember way back that just copying them from a CD to my fonts folder won't do it. I running Win98.

    I don't ever remember messing around with my Font folder so if it's messed up I don't know how.

    I may also download IE version 5.5 and see if that fixes the problem.

    Anyone with any other ideas?

    I believe IE6 still has some funny font and pt size problems in Win98... I have similar troubles now and then. You might like to try re-installing them by using your Control Panel/Fonts manager. Your thoughts about the 'verdana,arial,helvetica' options I believe is correct too... you should see whatever is loaded in Windows on your PC.

    Cheers

    In Internet Explorer:
    Clic on View -> Text Size -> Medium

    Should fix the problem.
