    Computer won't boot

I've got a P4/2GHz in a Gigabyte GA-8IDX, and, all of a sudden, it refuses to boot... Nothing appears on screen, all you can hear is the noise of the fans spinning... Ideas?

Sounds like dodgy RAM to me...most likely cause I would have thought. Geoffers , change the RAM and then if nothing comes up on the screen then I'd say that it would be caused by the motherboard or graphics card. Have you tried stripping it down so it is only running on Mobo, Graphics card, Hard disk, PSU?

    Monitor/Harddrive

Check your monitor. Sometimes a monitor will die on you without warning. Other times maybe a monitor connection is not properly attached.

Harddrives also can go to pot on you for no particular reason. Yank the harddrive put it into another computer and see if it's working.

Hopefully one of these suggestions will work for you.

Why should the RAM go wrong all of a sudden, I had told it to restart... It turned off, but no more happened...

Try booting up with just the core components, a graphics card, the mobo, cpu, and as little memory as possible, if there are multiple banks of memory in it. If it starts up, add one component back in and see if it starts until the stops booting.

If it doesn't boot stripped down, does it produce any error codes? Via beeps or if it has a two-digit hex error code readout mounted some place on the board. If it doesn't produce any error codes, then it means it is probably posting and could be a bad graphics card.

How do people post when their pc is dead

OK no boot could be several problems but the first thing I do now when it happens is to reset the bios with the jumper, if no go remove the battery for 15-20 mins also disconnect the psu (This prevents the capacitors from holding the current)

Put it all back and re boot. If it was the bios check what you have downloaded before it went dead then kill it zaaaap gone. I think the rest has been covered in this thread.

Good luck with your mission may the rom-rams be with you
