    how could I make IE use the gecko rendering engine ...

    I'm thinking replace mshtml.dll with something that points to Gecko's equivalent ... ?

    You can embed the Gecko rendering engine inside an ActiveX object (for Windows). I can dig up some links if you're still interested.
