    microsoft word hyperlink problem

I just ran into a microsoft word problem that I can't figure out for the life of me.

When a url is entered it is automatically formatted as:

{HYPERLINK "www.name.com"} instead of as www.name.com as a clickable hyperlink.

any help would be much appreciated!

    thanks

I have run into this problem before, and cna't remember how to fix it. I think it is caused by a wierd key combination.

I don't know what to tell you then. I couldn't even find anything related to it on Google. So when you type a URL and hit enter it automatically changes it to display {HYPERLINK "www.name.com"} ?

    yup, exactly.

then, if I highlight it, and right click to bring up a menu and select "select hyperlink" it is fine.

    Same Problem

I'm having the exact same problem. Anytime I type in a URL such as www.gurrydesign.com it changes it to { HYPERLINK "www.gurrydesign.com" }. It also does this to old Word documents that I created before the problem started.

What's weird is when I right-click the link and click Select Hyperlink, it selects it and makes it an actual hyperlink like so: www.gurrydesign.com. This means it can't be a formatting/style problem. I've tried using the format painter to copy the correct link and pasting it to the wacky one. No luck.

The other thing that's weird is when I select a messed up link like { HYPERLINK "www.gurrydesign.com" } and then paste it in the same document, it gets pasted as www.gurrydesign.com. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the registry? But I haven't been able to find anything online about this either. Hopefully someone can help us out.

I did end up fixing this problem although it isn't going to do you a whole lot of good because I can't remember what it is.

I do know that it is a key combination, and a simple one at that. I believe it involved one of the function keys. Basically you entered a mode by accidentally hitting a key combination ( or one key? ) and you get out of it by hitting the same key combination.

Sorry I can't remember what it was ( I should have written it down ), but hopefully this gets you in the right direction

Tools > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat Tab > Select 'Internet and network paths with hyperlinks' ?

    Mark, Already tried that.

jhogeterp, thanks, I'll play around with some things. If you happen to remember what it is, can you post it here? Thanks.

    Got it!

I figured it out. I accidentally hit the Toggle field codes shortcut which is Alt+F9. The shortcut can be found about half way down this web page under Formatting.

    This was a lifesaver

Wow. That was driving me nuts and repeated searches about "hyperlinks in Word" and related topics in all the usual places came up empty. In the end www.google.com/microsoft got me to this thread and the answer.

Failure to address this in MS Word help is yet another reason to hate Microsoft.

Hey there! I just registered here to say:
God (if you believe in it/he/she) bless you.
I was having the same problem and I couldn't figure it out why this was happening to me. I even reinstalled Office but the issue persisted until now.

    Alt+F9 lol

    Thanks a lot.
