1. ## Question about internet speeds

I've recently got new internet (fiber optic) and I'm a little curious about download speeds I'm getting and why.

When i look on my router is says my Downstream speed is 35000.

When i run speedtest.net (with nothing else downloading) I get a download speed of around 20-30Mb, and when I download files from the internet the most I seem to get is 4Mb, its usually around 2Mb for the majority of files.

I'm just curious as to why the speeds are different for the different things. Can anyone explain to me why this is ?

• You haven't mentioned the speed of connectivity specified by your ISP. It is normally a good connection to get a download speed of 4mb or around that when your speed test shows 20mb or so.

• My ISP estimated I should get around 40Mb but they said that could vary.

• What you are seeing on speedtest.net is Mb/s (Megabits per second) and what you see in your web browser during download is going to be MB/s (Megabytes per second). 20-30Mb/s from a 35Mb connection is good. So 4 MB/s is equal 32Mb/s so you are downloading at what you see on speedtest.net. Also keep in mind your download speeds are going to run into other limiting factors like how bogged down the server is where you are downloading files from or any congestion in the lines between you and the file server.

• Ahhhhh i never knew one was Megabites and one was megabytes , thought they were all just one of the other. So if 4 MB/s is the same as 32 Mb/s is 1 Megabyte 7 Megabites?

• No, there are 8 bits (it is bits not bites) in a byte. 1 megabyte/sec is equal to 8 megabits/sec.

• it can be changed depending upon the server you are downloading some files, if server permits you to download files at 4 mb then you can check download it. One more thing if you are getting speed 20mb from speedtest.net then at maximum you can download 3 mb of data.
