    outlook .dbx on network

    I found the registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{xxxxxxxxxx}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\Store Root

    = %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{xxxxxxxxxx}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\

which points to the folder which my inbox/outbox/... .dbx files are stored. I was wondering if I could set this value to a shared folder on the network. (ie: \\SECONDPC\OUTLOOK\). I only have one system up right now, so I can't test it. Has anyone ever done this before?

If you're wondering, the reason I'm doing this is because it would be easier than backing up the .dbx files when I need to reinstall and we could also access the same accounts from different PCs. I do realize that you won't be able to access outlook from both PCs at the same time, but this is not a concern because there is only one user using it.

I have attempted this "idea" before, and as you've already learned, you cannot access the same MS Outlook database from two PC's at the same time. Whichever one hits the file first, wins, and until that outlook session is closed, you won't have access to the data from any other machine.

You can share that folder, however, and then point Outlook on other machines to that share, via the File->Open->Personal Folders File

Just keep in mind that sharing your Outlook folder can expose that data file to unwanted outside sources; especially if you're hitting the internet with one of the machines.
