PHP is undeniably popular amongst those creating smaller web sites. But Java is probably more popular amongst those creating very large and very complex sites. Here's a hint: Any site you see using a suffix of ".do" is a JSP (Java) site. And there are tons of them. Amazon, Expedia, Bank of America, etc. Also, it seems to me that Java positions tend to pay more and tend to require a more intense interview and more extensive resume. But that's just an overall feel. There are certainly *some* PHP positions that pay loads of money; just that they are usually only the much more advanced positions.

PHP is the best web programming language. You should go for it, there is a high demand for PHP developers.

I have to agree with Old Pedant. Knowledge of Java will definitely lead to better job opportunities and higher pay rates than knowledge of PHP will. Bigger companies are more likely to use Java than they are to use PHP and they are more likely to employ more people to program for them than smaller companies will. Fewer people know enough Java to get a job using it than know enough PHP to get a job using that and so the Java people are in shorter supply and can therefore command higher pay rates.

My understanding of Java is that it is also far stricter in enforcing good program design and so beginners are likely to produce better quality Java code than they would be likely to using PHP.

Must get around to learning Java one day to add to the several dozen programming languages I already know. Perhaps next time I have a couple of hours of free time (whatever that is).

As of all said,at present PHP is in a trending position comparing to Java. I had even searched in search engines about the programming course which has been in a trending position and also has a bright future. Unanimously I got the answer as PHP. So, it is better to choose PHP than Java
