Question Trying to use responsive-nav and failing miserably

I'm working on creating a demonstration page to show the site owners how to move into the 21st century. This is the page: The Stovebolt Home Page

The current page, Stovebolt -- Old GM - GMC - Chevy Trucks!, produces 106 errors on the Nu Validator. The site makes extensive use of deprecated code and desperately needs to be updated.

After getting the test page to pass with zero errors for both HTML5 and CSS3 (while looking the same as the current page), I thought I'd cast about for a responsive navigation solution for the left side navigation menu. I found this: Responsive Nav — Responsive Navigation Plugin - which seemed to be fairly simple and straightforward. But I am struggling to understand it and to implement it. What I would like to see is a small box above the content that expands when you click on it, like this page: Responsive Nav Advanced Left Navigation Demo.

The solution seems very simple. No external libraries, one javascript, one stylesheet and a couple of additions to the page. But I clearly do not understand how this thing works, because I cannot get it to work. To see the current state of things, just view the source on the page. If you look at the javascript, I did make one change. I changed
    Code:
    label: "Menu"
    to
    Code:
    label: " Around the 'Bolt..."
I'm not a coder. I know just enough to be dangerous. I understand code enough to make changes without breaking things and find mistakes I make (like leaving off a semi-colon in a php script or leaving out a single quote in a string.) I can create a webpage that's HTML5 and CSS3 compliant, but I've never done anything with responsive menus.

Maybe I've bitten off more than I can chew?
