Cool Chatroom courtesy of Asp Application

I've been reading some stuff about ASP Application and I'm seeing where it might be of great use to me in the creation of a chatrooom.

But I'm concerned about two things:
    1. How much data can the application variable(s) store/how much is it advised to store in the variable?

    2. Will it clog up the server much like database conections and operations would?
I'm gonna find a way to download the internet if its the last thing I do...

You might want to look at this:

An ASP-based chat application - I think it uses the application object
    heavily.

Arrow Thnx, but still.... is it a good idea?

thanks for tha link.... it was kinda insightful.... really thanks! But uh I just needed an answer to whether or not it was wise to try and store a bunch of data in Application variables.

Didn't wanna look at code on how to create one? I will create one myself eventually..... I can't use code from else where because the users of the chat will have six administrators and just public users (so its a bit more technical than just getting someone's code and pasting then tryin to understand)

Just really wanted to know whether its a stupid/perfectly sane idea to try and store a bunch of data in the application variable or if I am gonna have to look some other method to store as limited data as possible in Application variables....

The link that you supplied... in terms of what I thought I would have to do in terms of process is the same:
    that is:
write data to application variables when user presses send
and then refresh the page that displays the variable info on a regular basis

Surely there MUST be a better to get it done? Say is there a way that I could ONLY refresh the page when a user types summin or somehow reopen a server connection to get the new Application data like a application_onChange event or so?

    AHHH!!!! EVIL!!!

application variables are as pants as session variables for storing data... DONT USE THEM FOR LARGE STRINGS LIKE THIS

you are better off with an efficient database connection, even if you are using a txt database (see http://www.connectionstrings.com/)

fso may work but make sure it wipes lines of text over a certain date old

im making a java chatroom as html ones are so rubbish, they also have to refresh every 2 or 3 seconds without any caching so its a huge pain on the server

Okay..... oooh!!! don't be puttin me up on a steak now.... please xplain further the crime that i have currently been charged with?

I think my charge is abuse/overuse/strenuous use of the application variables.....

But I honestly need a clearer picture of how much it is advised to store in ONE aplication variable and HOW MANY application variables i'm advised to use

(forgive me for i have sinned!)
