    ASP Shopping Cart Question

I was approached the other day by a client who wanted a shopping cart for his site, he said that either we can buy a shopping cart and implement that on his site or I can design and create the shopping cart. I've never designed a shopping cart before, but I am very familiar with ASP. Am I getting in over my head in wanting to design this myself? It seems pretty straight forward, but I'm wondering if anybody out there has designed a full shopping cart (with admin to change inventory and such). He also uses Authorize.net to accept credit card payments, has anybody used that before? Is it hard to implement into the shopping cart?

    Any advice is welcome.

    Thanks

Shopping carts really are not that complex but they do take longer to develop than most people estimate. Since this is your first, I would search around for a shopping cart prefab -- I call them "prefabs" because I have yet to find one that works with any preexisting website without some minor and possibly major tweaks.

There are literally thousands of these prefabs around, many are free or virtually free ($50 or less). Try various ones out and find the closest fit for your needs and then start coding from there.

    That would be my suggestion...

Remember, until you know how secure your site, and web server is, you should NOT store anything like credit card numbers or checking account numbers.

This is for the safety of your customers and safety for liability issues.

I would also make sure your passwords are md5 encrypted or something of the sort.

jgallen23, you should also know that this forum will help you with any questions you have when desgining a shopping cart.

My favourite site for ASP scripts, tutorials, and full out programs is ASP Index ( http://www.aspin.com/ ).

has anybody used authorize.net before? I'm not exactly sure how it works. I'm wondering if the secure part of the shopping cart would be running though authorize.net

I believe they have two types of interfaces: 1) a direct server to server interface where you provide an SSL certificate for your site for the customer to enter the payment info securely and pass the info to AN for processing and 2) a server redirect where you send the customer to the AN server for processing and hope the customer comes back when everything finishes. They've changed their system because of security requirements and may have phased out the server redirect option but someone else will need to confirm this...

    Very good ASP Shopping Cart

    jgallen23,

Since you do not have a lot of experience building a shopping cart. You might evalutate Comersus. This is a very good Open Source Cart that is ver easy to brand and has extensive functionality built in e.g multilanguage support encrupted password storage, very solid cart administration sub web.

More advances functionality can be added by purchasing "PowerPacks" The base PowerPack with several merchant account forms & other basic functionality is only $45.

Here is a project I just started using Comerus.
