My IIS 5.1/ASP has gone missing

    Hi All,

I have been running IIS 5.1 that shipped with XP to test my asp files. Everything was fine but first the asp disappeared, then the complete local server went missing. I cannot get the management console to display the properties to turn the server back on.

Has anyone had this problem before? I can't test my asp until I fix it.

    Any ideas?

    Gary

    Hi Bouchel,

Yes, just tried that but the problem still remains. I can't get IIS to fire up.

    Thanks for the idea

when I did my first ASP page a few weeks ago, I was going in a forum where very basic questions were asked... like "where do I put my ASP pages to see them", "what is IIS" etc... I saw two questions very close to yours. It occured that the people facing this problem hadn't buy their winXP and where using a cracked version. I don't know if that's your case but that could come from a bug (don't ask how and why). Just an idea...

    Hi Bouchel,

Fixed it. It wasn't IIS at fault, just windows. I reinstalled Norton Utilities which then found a number of broken links and active X controls. When fixed, IIS reappeared.

    My life is complete!

    Regards and thanks

    Hi All,

    Nope! It's dead again.

I am running iis5.1 under xp pro.

I cannot now start the web server. When clicking on the iis icon in admin tools, the popup window does not appear.

Under 'services', the last entry, www publishing says 'starting'(not started) and the start and stop choices in the menu are greyed out.

Under 'computer management', clicking on 'internet services' causes the pc to freeze up and I have to use the task mgr to delete the mmc entry to free it up.

I have reloaded xp but the problem remains.

    How do I fix this?

    Help

To start with, go into Services Manager, select the WWW Publishing Service, and set startup to manual. This will stop it starting up automatically.

    Now reboot.

    Now remove IIS.

    Now reboot.

    Now reinstall IIS.

Now reapply SP1 *and* all IIS patches that you have/care about.

    Now reboot.

    Does it work NOW?

    Hi Marcus,

No luck, the same problem remains. IIS Admin and ICS start ok but under 'services', the last entry, www publishing says 'starting'(not started) and the start and stop choices in the menu are greyed out.

For some reason it cannot complete the start up. Can IIS be obtained seperately from the version on the XP disc? It might be worth trying another 'copy'.

    Regards

What do the Event, System and Application logs say after IIS has tried to start (after your last reboot)?

The errors you find in those logs could give you a clue about how to fix the problem.
Check out the Forum Search. It's the short path to getting great results from this forum.

    Fixed IIS 5.1 under XP

    Hi All,

IIS is now working. This is how I did it:

    1. Ran Norton Windows Doctor, Norton Disc Doctor then RegClean.
    2. Rebooted
    3. Ran Norton Windows Doctor, Norton Disc Doctor then RegClean.
    4. Uninstalled IIS
    5. Rebooted
    6. Ran Norton Windows Doctor, Norton Disc Doctor then RegClean.

(It found some entries in the registry that had not been cleaned out!)

    7. Rebooted
    8. Installed IIS
    9. Rebooted
    10. Ran Norton Windows Doctor, Norton Disc Doctor then RegClean.
    11. Rebooted.

All seems to work OK except for one file that hangs but works fine on PWS (Win 98SE machine) or Windows Server 2000 (on the web)

Seems the dirty registry was the problem.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Regards

    Gary

    It's gone again!

    Hi Guys,

This is getting tedious, it's gone again!

OK, this is what has happened now.

The web server freezes in the 'starting' process. If I switch off Norton System Works 2002 and the Norton Antivirus that comes with it, it runs up. This gets most of my applications running but one application file 'displaycalculation.asp?mode=edit' just hangs.

Can anyone give me a list of the optimum IIS values that I can check mine against?

    Regards

    Gary
