    I personally have used ASP over PHP simply because it's what's used by the companies I have worked for. I know there are some PHP jobs out there, but I've seen more ASP jobs. Of course, with .NET here, you're not going to see as much classic ASP in the future.

    Most people I've talked with have found ASP to be much easier to setup and learn, which makes it an obvious first choice for beginners. It's easy to get IIS running and use that with an Access database, rather than installing and configuring Apache, PHP, and mysql. Not that those are extremely difficult either though. If you know C, then PHP might be a better learning language. Starting from scratch, it's my experience that VBScript (ASP) is much easier to learn.

    From a usefulness perspective, Microsoft is an enterprise level product. You aren't going to find a lot of corporate wide open source solutions with minimal support and backing to them. Basically the difference between a big contract with Microsoft as compared to "This product is provided "as is" and is without any warranty." from the other set of products. Not that the Microsoft product is necessarily better, but you have implicit guarantees.

    These are just my opinions and the impressions I've gotten from my experience.

    That's true. MY first exposure to ASP was when we had a choice to use it or PHP on a project. Since the servers were Windows NT, we chose to go with ASP, since ASP plays nicer with it than PHP. PHP is an excellent tool to use if you have a linux box, though.

    asp NET

    I have been using asp 2 and 3 for a few years and I think it was nearlly the same than PHP

    asp net is totally different I am using it now since nearlly 2 years (early beta one)

    and it is from far the greatest programming "thing" you can find
    // to JSP

    don't loose one second with old asp 3 ! >> JSP or AST NET
