Hello, I am back again with another problem:D

I have a small home network using my NETGEAR WGT624 router, and what I want to do is use my remote desktop with my computer and my laptop, both running XP home. I know that I have to forward port 3389 from my router. Once that is done, I still get the error, the client could not connect to the remote computer............. I also have remote enabled through XP, what else do I need to do?!?!

Thanks to any help

Do you have any sort of firewall running on the XP computer? The Windows one or otherwise. If so, you'll need to open the port up on there.

From what I understood, I didn't think you could use Remote Desktop on XP Home (that is, connect to a computer and take remote control of it when it's running XP Home?)

And with my Netgear router, I had to enable a demilitarised zone (DMZ) before I could remote into my LAN server from the internet even though I had a port 3389 forwarded to my lan server. It was odd but was the only thing that I could do to get it working..I'm assuming you want to take control of your home PC from outside your LAN?

Oops, I missed that it was XP Home. I think you are right about that. If the opening up the firewall doesn't get it to work; look into seeing if the Home Edition just doesn't support remote desktop.

I believe you can connect to a computer from home to pro or home to home. You can not connect from pro to home. My former college roommate and I did this last year. He had home and I had pro. He could take over my pc but I could not take over his.

Ok so I looked into my router and opened port 3389 to ip address 192.168.0.2, which is my computer, would I also need to open the same one to the laptop that im trying to connect to, which is 192.168.0.3. Windows firewall is not blocking it, I tried that too.

I used this for a while on my XP home computer before i ditched windows: http://access-remote-pc.com/

There are free trials, and its a small and easy to use program, not expensive either for single user. Multiple connection options too, and they have a java applet so u can use computers that do not have the client installed and still connect to your home computer.

I dont believe xp home supports remote desktop either, but with this program you could just keep re installing the free trial

You can't connect to a computer running XP Home via remote desktop, although you can control computers running XP Pro/Server 2003/2000 over terminal services etc.
If both of your computers running are running XP Home, to avoid upgrading to XP Pro I recommend doing what JiltedCitizen suggested - using RealVNC instead.

There is a free edition available - www.realvnc.com

For remote connetions from my laptop (at college) to my home computer to do emergency security scans, etc I use LogMeIn.com.

Thanks

Windows remote desktop is nowhere as good as VNC. VNC is free do download it and install it on both PC's, it will work on the home edition.
