Absolute and Relative Positioning

Howdy,
Absolute positioned divs use there containing box as there reference point, correct? For me they seem to use the viewports top left corner as a reference point instead.

Does a absolute positioned div need to be placed in a relative containing box to use the containing box as its referenc point?

Yep. An absolute block is relative to its relative container (the viewport if there isn't one defined).
