View Full Version : Logo & Site Design Needed

Ok, this isnt going to be everyones cup of tea but I have a VERY fussy client (my mother)
She doesnt really know what she wants but she knows what she doesnt like when she sees it.
A few years ago she used to run her own business then she got offered a full time position at a local company who have now made her redundant because they preferred hiring her as a private individual to do consultancy when they need it than as a full time employee (probably cheaper that way)
So she's relaunching her business and needs a shiny new website to go with it, so we need a logo, brand image and site design.

As she's so fussy and will reject designs without really being able to say why, my only option is to ask for designers who are up for it to come up with one ore more designs and a quote for each design (for design only and for design + build)
You must be able to provide the original graphics and source stock photos (with relevant copyright for the chosen applicant - not necessary at the 'pitch stage'). Please consider in your quote the costs of design tweaks - would like the price we choose to be the price we pay ;) (within reason - as I said, she's fussy)

Unlike my other projects, price is a factor here - though if theres a design she really likes thats outside her budget I'll probably foot the bill myself ;)

The logo has to be simple and look good in colour and black and white and at a variety of sizes

This is what she's said already
My current idea is to have the company name in distinctive type or
colour
and that becomes the logo. Some others I've seen have the name in large
type
and the 'consultancy' in small type underneath. Maybe an artisitc
squiggle
or something but I can't think of anything particularly relevant to the
business that hasn't already been used.

I don't need anything fancy or too big. I want something I can have on
my PC
and insert it on anything I produce like letterheads & reports.

I think something modern, professional with a feminine touch would be ideal for a general design overview.

Anyone who is interested in putting together some designs and quotes, please contact me and I will give more details about the company and requirements.

This is an ideal opportunity for those without a portfolio - the job goes to the person who comes up with the best design, regardless of experience and portfolio.

I dont mean to sound rude but if you are interested in the job please read the post and respond with what has been asked for.
If you cant accept the terms of the job, you cannot be considered for it.

Well, I also don't wanna sound rude and I know you're a professional person, NancyJ, but somehow this offer sounds like spec work where people sit down and spend time on creating designs, submit them with a quote and then don't even know whether they will be rewarded for the work they did...

Why don't you just hire a designer by seeing the past work they did and then the person creates a custom design for your mother?

If I may cite Gary (Graft-creative): Say no to spec work! http://www.no-spec.com/ ;)

It is spec work - and its completely normal for the industry. Advertising firms will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a 'pitch' to win an account - and they might not get it, they make up for it by charging extra on the ones they do win.
Its not compulsory, I'm not forcing anyone to do it - if you disagree with it then you're not obligued to apply. I know not everyone agrees with spec work and I wouldnt do it myself but this is about getting the best possible deal for my client. Its an ideal opportunity for designers with little portfolio to have a chance at getting a job relative to their skill rather than experience.
IMO spec work has its place in the industry, no-one is forced to do it but it can be a good opportunity to build portfolio for those that do it. Its also good experience working with demanding clients.

Given that my client is on a limited budget and has little idea about what she's looking for style wise, picking a designer would have to come down to price then - I've had quotes in the past from companies with pages and pages of portfolio who will do the job for $50 - but when they've had their 10th design rejected do you think they're going to stick around for that $50?

I've stated my terms clearly up-front, if those interested read it properly then they know whats involved and what the situation is. I'm not hiding anything of secretly trying to take advantage. I dont see what your problem is.

I have no, and never had any problem with you, NancyJ. Just wanted to raise awareness among potential applicants. And your statement shows a strong opinion so I'm the last one that would desperately try to hinder you in your business practices.
I'm German but not a work ethics Nazi (or whatever I should call that). ;)

Thank you to everyone that got involved, your time and patience is very much appreciated and if any of you would like to continue and try for the site design - that would be great.
