Tweaking Modem

does tweaking the modem settings do have a good effect to speed up the connection? What is the safest program to use (i once experienced using a program that does 'damage')?

If it's really effective, why didn't microsoft made the settings the default setting?

What settings are these programs changing? There isn't a whole lot there that can really affect the connection speed over the defaults.

hm...i don't know, i actually use preconfigured programs to tweak it in one click...
