Domain Registration

This is probably a simply answered question, but here goes:
When you register a domain with a registrar, how does the registrar register the domain?
I know it's something to do with DNS servers, and can I set one up for myself?

i think registrar sites pay a big amount to be part of the big world of domain names. you wouldnt be able to create/register your own.

the icann or whois people are the center of it all i think.

It's just I've seen sites offering dns servers, and I thought that was what they were for. I also assumed that if a hosting company could offer it (like webhosting), you could do it yourself (like webhosting).

you can run your own DNS servers .. but that is not the same as being a registrar.

You register your domain name with an accredited registrar and they register your domain name with the root DNS servers around the world, these then point requests to your DNS servers which in turn point to wherever you are hosting your website (there are other steps with country specific domains but thats the general idea)
