can I detect if a user is online using Javascript

I have looked all over to find out if it is possible to detect if a user is currently online before jumping to a url or playing a timeline which will load online content. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

navigator.online can help, but only if the user has selected the work without connection option in his browser
