<!DOCTYPE html
PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"

and I use CSS for my bits....but the styles do not work with that code in place but if I remove it it works fine...Got a clue??????

xhtml does not permit mistakes in html
thats called a document type declaration.

if you want to use xhtml, then you should post your code up so that someone can fix it, or you can change your doctype to something a bit more "loose"

like this
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

It may help to use a validator to get it right.
For html/xhtml: http://validator.w3.org/
For CSS: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator-uri.html
