View Full Version : Possible windows update problem?

My desktop computer(custom built myself) is having an issue with loading windows. Here is where I am at so far:

When powered on, it proceeds to the loading screen with the black background and the blue loading bar under the Windows XP logo. Once here, the loading bar freezes for about 10 seconds or so on average then looks like it is continuing to load, but it never gets passed this screen, the loading bar just keeps moving back and forth indefinately.

I ran a windows repair on the installation(the second option to repair so you get to keep data) and thought the problem was resolved. However, after reactivating and checking on all of my drivers etc.... I ran windows update and did the 60something updates that are listed. This of course prompts for a restart when finished and that is when my problem repeated itself and I was back to square one. This has happened twice now at the exact same place(right after windows update finishes)

Another strange thing to note is that when this problem occurs....if I press the reset button on my computer, the hard drive will not be recognized at all by the computer when it restarts. If i completely power off the computer, this issue is instantly resolved. I checked out the hard drive with Seatools and everything checked out fine.

I also have a working linux distro on another partition of this drive as of yesterday, and it works flawlessly(yay linux)

So my only idea is that there is a problem with one of the windows updates, or with how my computer is installing the updates etc....

Has anyone else had any issues similar to this or have any ideas?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Are any of those updates updating drivers? I know I ran into a problem once with XP wanting to update a driver for my Nvidia graphics card and when I updated to the one from the windows update it crashed and burned windows. I had to boot into safe mode and roll the driver back to the previous one.

Will yours at least let you boot into safe mode?

yes, safe mode works fine. When I get home tonight I will go over all the 60somethin updates with a fine tooth comb to double check what they are doing. I had been more concerned lately with the hard drive not being recognized sometimes, but with linux running without even a small hiccup my mind is at ease a little more about that.

Yeah if you can get into safe mode then I would suspect the updates installed a new driver that just isn't working. Sounds like the same thing I went through. I couldn't even get to the login screen on mine with the updated graphics driver.
