Not really sure how to proceed. It's a Dell that is roughly five yrs old and I do have an external Iomega dvd-rom (usb).

What about any usb ports? You can install windows off a usb stick I believe if the laptop is able to boot off of a usb stick.

And I know some Win2k install CDs are bootable (if not all of them). Can you boot off that external dvd-rom?

yes ... you could use your dvd rom in booting ... put it in a cd ...
or buy an external floppy drive and insert it on your usb
