how to serve a file with a password?

Is it possible to serve a file with a password associated with it so that once a user downloads and saves the file on their local machine they need to know the password to look at it?

Loads of options, none of which have anything to do with PHP; google "file encryption".

It's not like you can encrypt anything with PHP.
