I like to have all my shortcuts in the same spot, in a window, with text and icon, that I can alt-tab to. So far I've just created a folder on the desktop but I'm looking for something I can customize a little more than a standard windows folder.
I need text and icon (like the "list" view in a windows folder).
Does anyone know of a freeware utility that does this for me before I write my own? I couldn't get results from google; I don't really know what something like this is called! :p

Forgot to mention-- it would be like the "quick launch" bar, only with text and in window form so it can be moved around, minimized and alt-tabbed to.

I found the right search word for this kind of application-- launcher, or quick launch. And now I am mired down in a nightmare of poor choices, none of which do what I want, and probably install spyware on my machine. JOY!

Hmm look into ObjectDock. I use it all the time now. I rarely have to use my start menu anymore.

I would second ObjectDock, it's such a neat and useful package. It's completely customizable...You can choose colours, you can create multiple tabs on it and seperate your shortcuts by type (games, office, internet, etc) or have everything in one big tab. You are given much more control than you have with the Start bar alone.

I tried it-- it was very attractive. Unfortunately it didn't let me move it to my 2nd monitor-- I wonder why not? And there was no option to display text next to the icons, though I was able to make the icons very small. And it doesn't show up as an application (alt-tab or taskbar) so I can't use just keyboard to bring it to focus. I am so picky!!!! I'm going to try it for a while though, maybe I'll get used to it. I do like it overall, just wish I could move it anywhere.

The site says you need to buy the premium software to use it on multiple monitors.
