Hey, i have several custom cursors i need made and its sort of a one-time thing so i don't want to buy a program to do it.

Does anyone have the required program / be cool with converting them quickly?

there's only 6 little gifs, nothing too demanding.

Thanks a lot. I'll be out of town ti'll sunday night, so i'll respond then.

Thanks again for the help

Jameson

i uploaded both a .zip file containing the 6 .gifs, and each gif on their own incase openning an unknown zip is not to everyones liking. the last 2 gifs are in my next post

You do know custom cursors only work in IE?

i do, these will be inserted as a feature for those using I.E

they arent ESSENTIAL to the pages usage, but will make things a lot easier

Custom cursors work in Firefox too.

cursor:url("/cursors/myCursor.cur"), default;

sweet.

a bit off topic, but whats the code to say 'if i.e OR ff, use this cursor' (as i assume the code to use a cursor is different in i.e and ff.

does anyone have the ability to create the cursors? or can someone point me to a tutorial on how to make them?

the code I posted works in IE and FF.

Look at this page for cursor applications.

k i think i found a program to do it:

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,6857;order,1;page,1;c,All%20Downloads/description.html

i'll have to test it out sunday night though... and its shareware so it may not save properly :(

No it doesn't. Firefox won't show your custom cursor. It simply doesn't support them, when I say custom cursors I mean .cur files or .ani files. Anyways here are the converted cursors. I used a program called IconCool Editor (http://www.iconcool.com/cursor-maker.htm). Its a trial but it saves cursors just fine.

IconArt is a good freeware program, lets you make .ani and .cur and other desktop Icons

Hey, sorry for the delay.

Thanks aero, i used the program and your cursors, and managed to create (in proper proportion) 4 of the 6 cursors I needed.

The last 2 i am looking for are the ones used by Adobe Acrobat. When your mouse is over a document, you see a hand, and when you onmousedown, the hand closes.

where would be the best place to get those two cursors? are they located on my harddrive?

also, what would the javascript be to have one cursor appear onmouseover, and one appear onmousedown?

You may not need JS. What do you want to put your mouse over? I don't know where the cursors for acrobat are stored sorry.

What i want to do is as follows:

i have a table with both column headers and row headers, and with a table 'body'

you can see an example here: http://www.enviromark.ca/timetable/simplifiedTable.htm

I will use the cursor names found above:

when the user puts their cursor over the day row, i want the cursor 'day_column_HOVER.cur' to show when the user clicks on day row, i want the cursor 'day_column_ONMOUSEDOWN.cur' to show

when the user puts their cursor over the Time Column, i want the cursor 'row_time_HOVER.cur' to show when the user clicks on the Time Column, i want the cursor 'row_time_ONMOUSEDOWN.cur' to show

and in the 'body' of the table, i want to show the hand cursor when they are onmouseover'ing the cells, and the closed hand when they are drag-selecting the cells

now i know that by using a code such cursor:url("hand.cur"); you can set the onmouseover's no prob... (i think), but how do you change it via onmousedown when its over the same cell?

Okay since you are probably going to end up using this for IE setup CSS classes

#mainTable td {
cursor:url(day_column_HOVER.cur);
}
.day_col_down {
cursor:url(day_column_ONMOUSEDOWN.cur);
}
#mainBody td {
cursor:url(row_time_HOVER.cur);
}
.time_col_down {
cursor:url(row_time_ONMOUSEDOWN.cur);
}

Then the JS to have all time cells to change their cursor onclick

<script type="text/javascript">
function setClickTime()
{
var timeCells = document.getElementById('mainBody').getElementsByTagName('td');
for(var i = 0; i < timeCells.length; i++)
{
timeCells[i].onclick = function()
{
this.className = 'time_col_down';
}
timeCells[i].onblur = function()
{
this.className = '';
}
}
}
setClickTime();
</script>

awesome.

It works. it'll need some modification but its going into serverside app anyways so the code will get redone when that happens.

Thanks alot, you've been of IMMENSE help :)

YES IT DOES WORK. I'm using it now on my site. It works fine.

cursor:url("/cursors/myCursor.cur"), default;

You must have default in there.

Okay so it does work. How long have you had it on your site? I've always assumed it was an IE only thing. I know new versions of Firefox like 1.5 started adopted IE only stuff.

sweet!

would i need to have dual-codes in there so that both I.E and FF function, and if so how would that work?

No you can use the same code. IE will pick up the custom cursor. I guess Firefox will use it as well as long as ,default is there.

According to Using URL Values for the Cursor Property (http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Using_URL_values_for_the_cursor_property), Firefox has supported this since version 1.5. I just tested cursor: url("cell_ONMOUSEDOWN.cur"), auto and it works fine. The resource states that Firefox does not support animated cursors, however.

*Sigh* Didn't read page two. Bad habit.
