im redesigning my site now from scratch, so far i only have one page and a little bit of text in the stylesheet.

and for some reason, my single page does not want to open up in IE. even if i open the file in FF, copy the address, and paste it in IE, it is forced to open up in FF. if i right click the file and select Open with... IE, a "File Download" dialogue box appears.

i don't get it. the markup is valid XHTML...

well here's the markup if its any help at all:

index.shtml

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>Title</title>

<!-- head.htm starts here -->
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252" />
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="favicon.ico" />
</head>
<body>
<div id="wrapper">
<div id="wrapper2">
<div id="header">
<ul>
<li><a href="page.shtml">Link</a></li>
<li><a href="page.shtml">Link</a></li>
<li><a href="page.shtml">Link</a></li>
<li><a href="page.shtml">Link</a></li>
</ul>
</div>
<div id="body">
<!-- head.htm ends here -->
<div id="sidebar">

</div>
<div id="mainContent">
<h1>Heading</h1>
<p id="p1">some text here in this paragraph some text here in this
paragraph some text here in this paragraph some text here in this
paragraph some text here in this paragraph some text here in this
paragraph some text here in this paragraph </p>
<p>some text here in this paragraph some text here in this paragraph
some text here in this paragraph some text here in this paragraph
some text here in this paragraph some text here in this paragraph
some text here in this paragraph </p>
</div>
<!-- foot.htm starts here -->
</div>
<div id="footer">
<p id="p1">some text here in this paragraph some text here in this
paragraph some text here in this paragraph some text here in this </p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<!-- foot.htm ends here -->

</body>
</html>

thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this!:)

What file name extension does that file have?

Why are you using XHTML 1.0 Transitional? What are you transitioning from?

.shtml (the stuff between the comments, im going to take that out and save in seperate files and just include it for easy maintenance)

--- can IE only open .shtml files when already uploaded to a server?

the transitional? oh right, my old site had some inline frames so i used that. but i'll just change it to strict now.

EDIT: just ran a validation check on my page using the strict doctype. i have to use JS to open a new window now? oh all right... :rolleyes: if i have to...

.shtml files open in IE fine for me, but I might have edited the registry so that they will. If you'd like me to see if yours needs changing, then follow these instructions:

Open the "run" item in the start menu. Type in "regedit" (without the quotes) and click ok. Navigate to /HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.shtml right click on the ".shtml" and select export. Save the file somewhere you can find it, close regedit, find and open the file you just created, and then post the contents here.

did what you said, here it is:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.shtml]
"PerceivedType"="text"
@="FirefoxHTML"

i assume the lack of the words "Internet Explorer" here is the cause of my problem? what do i do now?

thanks! :)

No. That's what it should be if you have Firefox installed and you didn't change it to something else.

What version of Windows are you using? WinXP Home? WinXP Pro?
