Difference in colour between browsers - help!

Hi,

I have created a background for a webpage in paint, and then used this with various tables etc for it to appear within my page so I can then use iframes within sections to show pages.


I have various colours I have used for my background, and for the iframes, I have had to get the Hex number of each colour.

So, one particular colour I have in RGB format is R=148, G=153, B=160 which corresponds to the Hex number 9499A0.


Now, when I display the webpage with my iframe pages (I set the background property colour as 9499A0), there is a slight change in colour. This seems to happen in Internet Explorer, but there is no colour difference in Firefox.




Can anyone maybe tell me why? The only thing I can think of is that maybe something to do with the 216 safe colour palette? Do I have to use safe colours for them to appear correctly in IE? Bit annoying if I do because the colour choices from the 216 do not really suit the colour scheme I am hoping for :(

What type of image did you save it as? png, gif, or jpg?

I have saved the images as PNG's.

Thing is, if I save them as anything else, the quality of the colour changes dramatically, as GIF'S, there are distinct colour changes, so saving them as that, the HEX numbers wouldn't match up correctly.

I presume it might be something to do with saving them as PNG format?

How can I get round this?

Yes it is because of the png format. IE is seeing the colors differently. To get around it you'll need to get a better editor other than paint.

The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org) is free and its similar to Photoshop. In time you can do just about anything Photoshop can do. If you image doesn't have any drop shadows which I don't think it does you can save it as a gif and not lose any color quality.
Paint Shop (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel3/Products/Display&pfid=1047024307383) is another program that is decent for beginners, it doesn't have as many features as Photoshop but you may not need them all. This one is not free.
Fireworks is another great program but its been discontinued due to Adobe buying out its maker.
