Is your printer out of ink?

What exactly was the name of the task? Was is explorer or iexplore?

I'm guessing you ended explorer though to make all the icons dissapear? When you do that you can just CTRL ALT DEL again and Run - explorer.
Are you sure it wasn't explorer? If it was you could always have a look on Google to see if there's anything - seems to be - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=100%25+cpu+explorer .

Have you thought about running malware scans? a lot of problems like that are caused by malware running on your system. I'd download Lavasoft Adaware, Spybot Search and Destory as well as AVG Antivirus. Update them and run full system scans, deleting all of which you find.

ive got spybot search and destroy and symantic virus removal/internets security. Spy bot says nothing is wrong with it
