If you enjoy maths, I suggest creating an RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) calculator. The concept is fairly easy to understand and use. The difficult part is implementation of the concept obviously. There are a few online RPN calculators, some of which are simple while others are complex.
Here are a couple of RPN calculators:
http://www.hp.com/calculators/news/rpn?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN - Hewlett-Packard makes RPN calculators for sale. This is a simple online version.
http://www.arachnoid.com/lutusp/calculator.html - contains information below the calculator
http://www.dsv.nl/~ovide/rpn.htm - 2 different calculators, the last more complex than the first (RPN calc 2 is simply wrong with multiple computations)
References (external links from the following page, which also has information):
2 + 3 * 4 would be calculated using
3 [ENTER] 4 * 2 +
2 [ENTER] 3 [ENTER] 4 * +
How about something more interesting like this:
(2 + 3) * 4 ?
4 [ENTER] 2 [ENTER] 3 + *
2 [ENTER] 3 + 4 *
It can be a really good challenge to program, whether it is for a hobby or for a college project or even for a job (Hewlett-Packard actually makes RPN calculators for sale). If you choose this, I wish you good luck!

Make a game. I made a game for my 8 week project and found it really good because you have to do a lot of things: graphics, sound, objects, loops, arrays, functions, user input, etc.
Stay away from 3D at this point as it will probably take up too much of the time.
There are plenty of ideas for games out there, if you have VB skills then you should be able to make your own version of some of the windows games.
You could make a web based game using php and a MySQL database which would demonstrate these skills.
There are plenty of possiblities, Have Fun!

Hi tanx for the inputs but i needed something a bit more comprehensive.Would prefer something on the lines of a VB6 project with a backend...like an inventory system or something more complex...hope you'll get the drift.Thank you.
