Hi all

Today, IT certifications are more and more popular.
It's said that those who've got many IT certificates and well experiences are more likely to gain much salary than those who haven't.

Let me know your opinions on IT certifications.

Thanks in advance.

I have found that if you work for any type of government, certifications and any type of education does not mean you will get a higher salary. All it means is that you are more qualified for the position than the other guy who does not have these.

If you go into the private sector, that's when you will be rewarded for your education and certification.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Not really true. I know many IT consultants which would not even consider people with an MSCA/E/Dev over someone who has hands on experience. Certifications just show you have sat and learnt something, not necessarily implemented anything in the real world, out of the classroom environment.

In my experience, excessive certifications are not a good thing. People are often 'romanced' into taking certifications while unemployed or in a job they dislike with the notion that it will get them a better job.
Adverts are on the tv all the time for places like 'computeach' - try to convinced the bored and unemployed that IT is the promised land and they can help you 'study for qualifications employers really want!'. When in reality if they spent the time/effort/money involved in these courses on experience (even non-comercial) they would have a much better shot of getting a decent job.
If you just happened to have a lot of certifications, either through a university course or paid for by your employers, I would say you should specify the reason for taking the qualification and only include the most relevant qualifications to the job you're applying for.
A few good certifications in combination with experience could give you a bit of an edge when applying for a new job but it wouldnt increase your salary. If you're comparing 2 people in the same job, 1 with certs and 1 without, they would likely be earning the same.
